Visiting a factory in person is one of the smartest moves you can make before placing an order. You can inspect quality, verify the operation is real, and build a relationship with the people who will make your product. For most foreign visitors, the visa you need is the M visa, China's business visa.
What the M Visa Covers
The M visa is issued for commercial activities: trade fairs, factory visits, contract negotiations, supplier meetings, and short-term business inspections. It does not allow you to take up employment in China, but it is exactly the right category for sourcing trips.
Documents You Will Typically Need
- Passport, valid for at least six months with blank visa pages.
- Completed visa application form with a recent passport-style photo.
- An invitation letter from the Chinese company or factory you are visiting, on company letterhead, stating your name, passport number, visit dates, purpose, and who covers the costs. A trade fair invitation letter also works for exhibition visits.
- Supporting documents such as your round-trip flight booking and hotel reservation; some consulates also ask for a copy of the inviting company's business license.
Where to Apply
Apply at the Chinese embassy or consulate, or the Chinese Visa Application Service Center, in your country of residence. Processing is usually four to seven business days, and express options exist if you are in a hurry.
Validity Options
M visas are issued as single-entry, double-entry, or multiple-entry, typically for 30 days per stay. Frequent visitors can often obtain longer multiple-entry visas, which is worth requesting if you plan to visit China several times a year.
Practical Tips for Your Factory Visit
- Ask the factory for a formal invitation letter early; they know the format consulates expect.
- Plan visits to two or three factories in the same region to make the trip worthwhile.
- Bring a bilingual interpreter or hire a sourcing agent if you do not speak Chinese.
- Inspect samples against your specifications before discussing price.
